Glider Course

The course for obtaining the Sailplane Pilot License (SPL) is divided, according to the provisions of European Regulation (EU) No. 1178/2011 (PART FCL), into two parts, one theory and one flight.

Theory

Theory classes are held in the teaching room with a qualified teacher. The theoretical program covers the following topics:

  1. Aviation regulation
  2. General notions about aircraft
  3. Meteorology
  4. Principles of flight
  5. Communications
  6. Air navigation
  7. Aviation medicine and aviation psychology

To be eligible to take the theoretical pre-examination at the flight school and, if eligible, the theoretical examination at ENAC, the student must have attended at least 60 percent of the theoretical classes.

Flight

The flight training program is carried out according to the mission schedule prepared by the flight school.

To start the course you need:

  • Be in possession of first or second class medical fitness, to be obtained from the Air Force IML or authorized AME physician
  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Enroll as a student pilot in the Pavullo Aero Club.
  • Photocopy of valid ID card
  • Tax code

Flight training can be done with 3 different modes of involo (take-off) of the student’s choice:

Takeoff with winch

This type of training must include no less than:

  • 10 hours dual command with instructor
  • 2 hours as a “solo” pilot with instructor supervision
  • 75 launches
  • A 50km flight as “only” pilot or 100km flight with instructor

The total cost is € 3,420

Takeoff with tow plane

This type of training must include no less than:

  • 10 hours dual command with instructor
  • 2 hours as a “solo” pilot with instructor supervision
  • 45 takeoffs
  • A 50km flight as “only” pilot or 100km flight with instructor

The total cost is €4,400

The cost of the course includes:

  • Course registration
  • Annual membership in the Aero Club for the first year
  • Office practices
  • Theory lessons
  • Teaching materials
  • Airport services

The flight activity for the two types of takeoff is the minimum required by European Regulation (EU) No. 1178/2011 (PART FCL) and may increase depending, primarily, on the aptitude of the student and the continuity with which he/she performs the flight activity.

Holders of another pilot’s license will have credit recognized, so the activity will be reduced.

Glider pilot license holders, with a rating in one of the 3 types of Glider pilot, may obtain a rating in the other forms of gliding with an appropriate course.

The scheduled flight exam at the end of the training will be conducted with an ENAC examiner on board.
